Our Beliefs
Students are more invested in their education when they have choices in activities that speak to their individual gifts and interests. It is our goal that each student at St. Andrew's Academy not only recognizes their individual strengths and talents but celebrates and finds ways in which to share them with the world. We believe that each child is unique and learning experiences must take into account the wide range of abilities, interests, and learning styles. Enrichment clusters enable us to better fulfill our mission of providing engaging, challenging and enjoyable learning opportunities by offering exploratory opportunities designed to expose children to a variety of topics not covered in the general curriculum.
Enrichment clusters are cross-grade, student-centered activities where students choose classes based on their individual interests. Cluster classes typically run from six to eight weeks for about one hour per week. Catalogs with class descriptions are sent home prior to the start date and students have the opportunity to list their top three choices.
The following is a description of the enrichment cluster classes offered during the 2006-07 school year:
Making Books that Fly, Fold, EC 01 Grades K,1,2,3,4 Pop Up, Twist, and Turn

Do you enjoy creative writing? Get excited to learn different ways to make books. We will also explore the history of books around the world.
Chess and Beyond EC 02 Grades 2-4
Mrs. Armstrong
Are you interested in learning how to play chess? Do you want to learn some new strategies of the game? Learn the names of the playing pieces, how they move around on the board, and how to play the game of chess. You will have time to play the game with many friends to improve your skill. We will also create our own chess game board with pieces.
Clay Animation EC 03 Grades 2,3,4
Mrs. Norman, third grade teacher
Do you enjoy watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty, and Davey and Goliath? Have you ever wondered how those movies were made? Come join the “Clay Animation” cluster and create your own frame-by frame film! You will write a script and add voices, music, and graphic effects to your clay creations!
Build a Shelter in the Woods EC 04 Grades k,1
Mrs. Anderson, fourth grade teacher and Lower School Director
This enrichment cluster will include nature exploration and fun! Students will participate in hikes and team building activities that encourage a love for our natural world. Students will learn how to problem solve collaboratively to accomplish different challenges such as building a bridge over a stream and building a shelter that the whole team can fit in.
Requirements: We will get dirty! Work gloves and old clothes are a must. Students will have the opportunity to change into their work clothes before we head outside.
ART - Paint, Homemade EC 05 Grades k,1,2,3,4 Clay, Plaster and Yarn
Mrs. Cavin, volunteer, artist and art teacher Mr. Cavin, fourth grade teacher and Head of School
Bring your artistic interests and develop your artistic skills. Young artists will expand their imaginative talents and develop technical skills to produce original creations.
Competitive Badminton EC 06 Grades 3,4
Mr. Glover, physical education teacher
This course will be much different than backyard badminton. Tournament badminton is now an Olympic sport. Proper footwork, badminton strategy, and all the shots will be taught. The students will be made aware of the tremendous agility, coordination, and conditioning this sport entails.
Jewelry Jamboree EC 07 Grades 2-4 Mrs. Salter, music teacher
Beaded necklaces, hemp bracelets, and funky chokers are just a few things we will create in Jewelry Jamboree! We will learn different beading techniques and weaves to create jewelry in styles for both males and females. If you crave creativity, this is the cluster for you!
Putting Techniques EC 08 Grades k-4
Ms. Luoma, Spanish teacher
We will talk about grip, aim, and strategy in this cluster. Then we will have a putting tournament! |
